Golden Flogger Award nomination

Why did you begin writing BDSM novels?
I’m an avid reader and I found myself becoming bored with many of the sex scenes I was reading in romance novels. It got to the point where I began flicking past these scenes to get to the rest of the story. I became tired of what I describe as the one, two, three sex scenario. It goes something like this. One: some kissing. Two: a bit of nipple action. Three: the shagging with the obligatory simultaneous orgasm.

The end.

Then I read some BDSM romance novels and a whole new world opened up before me. I was hooked.

I love writing about BDSM because there are so many elements to explore. Not only all the wonderful things people can do to one another, but also how the characters feel about needing to do it or having it done to them. I liken BDSM sex to an onion, since there are just so many layers to peel back and investigate. And what most people in the biz call vanilla sex, is more akin to a potato – pretty unappetizing, unless you do something to jazz it up. (Don’t ask me why I’m doing food analogies. Perhaps I’m hungry right now). Chip, anyone?

What does being nominated for the Golden Flogger Award mean to you?
I am honored and humbled and excited beyond belief. Honestly, I can’t even describe my feelings accurately.

What is the hardest part of writing your novel?BDSM Writers Con, Sayara St. Claire
I discovered recently that I have great difficulty when two characters are in love and for whatever reason one of them has to treat the other badly. This happened in the second novel in the series I’m currently working on. The emotional heartache was just all too much for me and I had to skip to the end. Being the methodical type person that I am, having to jump out of sequence made me absolutely crazy. However, I finally put my big girl panties on and dealt with the angst and drama and we all survived — my characters, myself and my panties.

Tell us a little about yourself and your writing works.
I’m an ex-scientist and ex-wallflower. These days I’m more likely to make up skits using ridiculous accents or tell you dirty jokes until you laugh, than doing all that hiding in the corner business. I love to read, sing, dance and bake. I tend to do the last three at the same time. But when I read, I read, and nobody had better come near me. I play the piano occasionally. One of my great passions apart from writing is interior decorating. And I’m obsessed with vampires and chocolate.

My writing works: Up until a few years ago, my writing experience consisted of scientific journal articles. And I have to tell you, even to a scientist they’re an absolute snooze-fest. Writing fiction is so much more fun and it makes me wildly happy.

I’m close to completing the second book in the Dante’s Purgatory series (of which Hurt Me, Heal Me is the first). After I finish the third book in this series, I plan to get back to my half-written paranormal series. My vampire is currently knocking on his coffin lid and begging to be let out to play. I can deny him no longer!

Will you be attending BDSM Writers Con?
Unfortunately I can’t attend, although I would dearly love to do so. I’m currently living in Asia and the eighteen-odd-hour flight would be hard for me. Since the car accident I was involved in some years ago, sitting still for that long is a tad difficult. However, I’m a “look on the bright side” kind of gal, so I’m just happy to be alive and kicking. I also know there are many kind and helpful authors who are gracious enough to share the knowledge gained at conferences like BDSM Writers Con. I’m looking forward to hearing all about their experiences and living vicariously through them.
