I started writing BDSM short fiction erotica because I needed the rent money. Mostly, though, I write non-fiction books. I write non-fiction because they’re the books I desperately wanted for information when I was starting out with this – especially books about 24/7 Master/slave relationships – and they weren’t there. I wrote them for the people out there who are where I was. If I’d had the resources that I’ve put out now, it would have saved me ages of trouble in the beginning, when we were first working things out.

I’ve owned my slaveboy Joshua for 12 years, and we are the 2014 Northeast Master/slave titleholders … so yes, we live it all the time. I also have a sub boy who lives with us and serves me (and an egalitarian senior partner) and we are all a big kinky polyamorous family. I’m determined to write books that are useful for people who want to do this on a practical day-to-day basis, because porn is not appropriate to base reality on.

Everything that I and my slaveboy write is based on our experiences, and the hundreds of interviews we’ve conducted with other D/s and M/s couples. We have been teaching classes on power dynamic relationship skills (in 5 countries and 17 states so far) for seven years. We know it because we do it, all the time. Our first big non-fiction book on the subject was “Dear Raven And Joshua: Questions And Answers About Master/Slave Relationships”, which is an FAQ built of the many questions on the subject we answered over the years. We started out writing original answers to the questions that would turn up in our email, then we had a file of them that we’d clip and paste from (because so many people were asking the same things), and when the answer file reached 300 pages long we realized that we had a book.

We are activists as well as educators. We don’t just teach to people inside the M/s or BDSM demographics – we teach to health care professionals, religious communities, polyamory conferences, and anyone who is interested. We intend to keep teaching and churning out useful books on these topics until we are too decrepit to type and speak. We don’t do it for fame or money – we are intent on changing the world, or at least our little part of it. I think I’m most proud of our four-book series on how to have power exchange relationships if you’re disabled in some way – the two books up for nomination are part of that series, and the other two – *Hell On Wheels* and *Kneeling In Spirit* – are about physically disabled folks in this lifestyle, and how they make it work. I’m also proud of *Unequal By Design*, an anthology on counseling power dynamics that is by and for mental health professionals – I co-edited that one with a friend who is a psychiatrist, and it is the one you take to the shrink when you’re not sure they know what to do with you and your master or slave.

We’ve now put out 12 non-fiction books on BDSM and/or power dynamic relationships, one gay BDSM erotic novel, and one anthology of transgender erotica. We helped to begin Alfred Press, a writer’s cooperative for small-market alternative relationship books. I’m currently working on a book on energy work in power dynamic relationships, a book on power dynamics from a Northern Tradition Pagan spiritual perspective, and a book of questions to ask for people who are interviewing potential D/s or M/s partners. I write books as the ideas pop up – as people say, “Is there anything out there on this subject?” and the answer is No.

  1. I remember Raven from TSR years ago. Always a gentleman and so full of wisdom. I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with him and his boy Joshua, always a pleasure to hear their perspective on things.
