Kinky Chat with Kira Barker

Kira Barker
Golden Flogger Award Nominee

Why did you begin writing BDSM novels?
The BDSM lifestyle is something I’m passionate about, and I feel it is oftentimes misrepresented, particularly in books and movies. In a way, I started writing about it to show the world that people who are into kink are just normal people, and they have exactly the same issues as everyone else, if maybe a more open way of dealing with our sexuality.

Do you participate in D/s activities or merely write about them?
I participate, although I’m personally more at home on the SM than the D/s part of the playground.

Where did you get your information on this lifestyle?

First-hand experience, a lot of chatting with like-minded folks, and some of the great books written by our gurus (particularly for the poly aspect of my stories).

What does being nominated for the Golden Flogger Award mean to you?
A great honor. Debut novel, first award nomination, need I say more?

Where would you like to see the BDSM genre head? How will it get there?
More realism, more diversity, acceptance of the less “mainstream” kinks, too. I think we are on the right track already with both informing the masses and incorporating everything out there into our novels. Progress might be slow, but I believe that we are heading in the right direction.

What is the hardest part of writing your novel?

Editing. But seriously, any story has a point where it seems like a lost cause. It wouldn’t be worth telling if it didn’t cost the writer a few sleepless nights of tossing and turning. Often it is the details and nuances that need to be just right to make it work.

Tell us a little about yourself and your writing works.
I’ve been a kinky girl pretty much my entire adult life. In 2014, I started publishing my books. Caught in the Middle is my debut novel, and it’s book one in a five book series. I love writing erotic fiction because I think the world needs more of it – the high quality kind, with great characters and gripping plots. I also write thrillers and paranormal fiction, and dystopian horror under a different penname.

Kira Barker has always enjoyed telling stories. It has kept her sane through high school and college, and has become a true passion since. A geek gamer girl herself, she feels at home reading sci-fi and fantasy as much as writing romance. She likes her plots gritty, her smut realistic, and doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty when it comes to research. When she’s not writing, she loves annoying her cats or cruising country roads on her motorcycle. You can find out more about her books on her website: www.kirabarker.com
