Jane Davitt
Golden Flogger Award Nominee
Speaks out
Why did you begin writing BDSM novels?
I find it a great way to explore a romantic relationship between two characters. The mutual trust needed adds richness to the love story and there’s the potential for so much intimacy and discovery of self and partner. Plus, this genre appeals to me as a reader and so it’s both challenging and rewarding to contribute my take on it.
Do you participate in D/s activities or merely write about them?
The latter. Inside my head, I’m kinky, but in real life there’s never been the chance to explore that side of me in any meaningful way. No regrets; I’m very happily married to a wonderful man!
What does being nominated for the Golden Flogger Award mean to you?
It is a huge honor and I’m beyond thrilled. It feels like a validation of my stories, Life Under New Management in particular. That book was a joy to write. It’s set in Vancouver, a city I love, and revisiting it in the book brought back many happy memories.
Do you conduct any advocacy work in this lifestyle or is it strictly fiction base for you? If so, what?
Mostly fiction, though I have written stories with part of the proceeds going toward charities like the It Gets Better Project and the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom.
What is the hardest part of writing your novel?
Getting started is easy; there’s the excitement of a new project to carry me forward. Then a chapter or two in, I hit a lull and have to push through it. Once I get about halfway the worst is over. But really, it’s not hard. I love writing and if the characters are fully formed in my head, telling their story is fun.
Tell us a little about yourself and your writing works.
I’ve been writing for over a decade. I started out writing fanfic, mostly featuring same-sex pairings, and then tried my hand at an m/m BDSM novel. It was accepted and I never looked back. I write solo novels but I often collaborate with Alexa Snow too. I have twenty-one novels in print, which still amazes me. Not all are BDSM, but all are romances with happy endings.
Will you be attending BDSM Writers Con or other events we can meet you at?
Not in the foreseeable future, sadly. I live in Canada and most events take place too far away.
Jane Davitt is English, and has been living in Canada with her husband, two children, and two cats, since 1997. Writing and reading are her main occupations but if she ever had any spare time she might spend it gardening, walking, or doing cross stitch.
Jane has been writing since 2005 and wishes she’d started earlier. She is a huge fan of SF, fantasy, erotica, and mystery novels and has a tendency to get addicted to TV shows that get cancelled all too soon.
She owns over 4,000 books, rarely gives any away, but is happy to loan them, and is of the firm opinion that there is no such thing as ‘too many books’.
