Golden Flogger Award Nominee
Shares a little about her writing

Why did you begin writing BDSM novels?
I’m a big fan of power structures in fiction. Building them up, dismantling them, messing about in the wreckage. Characters struggling to cope with complicated feelings are only improved, in my opinion, by the addition of a few taboo elements. I first dipped my toes into the BDSM genre with my first novel, A Touch of Spice, and quickly realized that this was something I enjoyed writing about. Glass Houses was a very enjoyable return to the idea of a female dominant character.

What does being nominated for the Golden Flogger Award mean to you?
I’m absolutely thrilled and honored. It’s a lovely surprise. I’m very grateful Glass Houses is being considered.

Where would you like to see the BDSM genre head? How will it get there?
More diversity. I would love to see dominant/submissive dynamics flipped on their heads, masochistic characters who don’t necessarily crave dominance in their partners, dominant or sadistic characters who question their preferences and must learn to explore them safely. I think we’re getting there, though. As BDSM gains prominence as a subgenre, authors rightly want to explore less familiar scenarios. I’m very optimistic.

What is the hardest part of writing your novel?
As with any novel, Glass Houses was easy enough to put to paper as an idea but a lot more difficult to bring together. I knew I wanted to flip the Dom/sub dynamic on its head and let the struggling, slightly insecure character wield the crops and floggers. I also knew that I wanted my male submissive character to remain a worthy romantic interest. It was a challenge to create a dynamic that was both non-traditional and still very much rooted in the ‘boy meets girl’ scenarios I so love to read.

Tell us a little about yourself and your writing works.

I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, though professionally only for the last three years. Stories have always come easy to me—and the more unconventional the better—but as a queer lady it took me a good while to give the romance genre a shot. I took a punt sending a manuscript along to Totally Bound and, much to my astonishment, got a positive response. It’s been a whirlwind ever since. These days, I get up at 5 AM most mornings to write. My interests range from sci-fi to murder-mysteries, but romance and sexy characters are always a must. More and more, I find that I enjoy blending suspense and romance regardless of genre or period. Who knows, maybe for my next trick, I’ll combine romance, suspense and BDSM!

Helena Maeve has always been a globe trotter with a fondness for adventure, but only recently has she started putting to paper the many stories she’s collected in her excursions. When she isn’t writing erotic romance novels, she can usually be found in an airport or on a plane, furiously penning in her trusty little notebook.
