for Submission at the Tower

Why did you begin writing BDSM novels?
I have always been intrigued by the notion of power exchange, and ever since I was aware of my own sexuality, I have known that bondage and submission excite me. When I started writing again after the birth of my second child, I was looking for a compelling genre to sink my teeth into and once the words began to flow, I found that it was BDSM erotic relationships that I was drawn to write about.

Consensual power exchange and the complexities of yielding control for mutual sexual and emotional satisfaction is an endlessly fascinating area. I write in the first-person and unusually in the present-tense. This means that the reader feels everything from the submissive character’s perspective and never quite knows what is going to happen next… “Submission at The Tower: The Depths of Desire” is the contemporary, BDSM romance that I have always wanted to read.

Do you participate in D/s activities or merely write about them?
My sexuality is an important aspect of my life, and I am therefore compelled to delve into every fantasy with my fabulous husband! This means that yes, we are definitely participators in D/s activities! I started to explore my own sexual identity from a young age, but even now I am still learning about my own submissive needs and desires. That said my submissive yearnings are sexual only and beyond my sexuality, I am neither docile nor obedient!

What does being nominated for the Golden Flogger Award mean to you?
I am absolutely blown away by this nomination! The fact that somebody enjoyed “Submission at The Tower: The Depths of Desire” so much that they actually nominated it for a Golden Flogger Award is both humbling and inspiring. Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to be involved and show case my work!

Where would you like to see the BDSM genre head? How will it get there?
It seems as though the concept of BDSM has become more mainstream in the last few years. The Fifty Shades phenomenon has enabled people to actually sit down and discuss things like bondage and spanking in coffee shops! That said, BDSM can still be a taboo subject and is easily misrepresented. I think there is still stigma for women who are sexually submissive and choose to proactively surrender to a man. In the fight for gender equality, female submission is something of a paradox. It’s this contradiction that interests me both personally and professionally.
I would like my novels to tackle this head-on and create characters who can take on the emotional roller coaster of yearning, shame and desire. I hope other books in the genre will also help to uncover the consensual D/s dynamic, illustrating the undeniable connection between (two) people who share more honesty and commitment than most other relationships. Books cannot change public opinion alone, but literature does have an influence. There is still a tendency to view BDSM behavior as ‘deviant’ and not all books on the subject have been helpful at altering this perception. I would like my own (and other) books to help BDSM perspectives become more generally accepted and celebrate this sensational form of sexuality!

Tell us a little about yourself and your writing works.
I’m a busy, open-minded woman in my thirties, just starting out on this amazing BDSM writing adventure. I have penned and published numerous short erotic stories and a novella, and “Submission at The Tower: The Depths of Desire” is my first full-length BDSM erotic romance novel. I have two new novels in progress and am looking forward to embracing and demonstrating the power and positivity of dominance and submission.

Here’s five things that Felicity is passionate about:

  1.  Reading and writing – not a surprise, but I have always loved to do both and I still do!
  2. Eating and drinking – yep, I do love to eat! My favourite foods are a good steak, Italian and Chinese food, plus a good English roast dinner… Yummy!
  3. Sex, sex and more sex – I am a seriously sexual person, so aside from writing about sexual chemistry and burgeoning sexual relationships, I also enjoy researching the subject with my wonderful hubby…
  4. Civil liberties and human rights – I studied politics and society at university, and still ardently support the fight for equality and social justice.
  5. The paranormal – proving that I like *all* things which go bump in the night!

Thanks again for having me here, Charley!

About the author:
I write as Felicity Brandon, creating unadulterated, scorching stories soaked with BDSM, spanking, humiliation and ménage. I have penned D/s stories inspired by every walk of life, including a crumbling marriage, an unexpected lesbian affair and corporate disciplinary action, and whilst the scene changes, my unique style remains the same. I only know one way to write, and that is with emotional intensity. I want my readers to feel what the characters are going through. I want them to feel each emotional response, each attraction, each disappointment and each new level of arousal. Without this emotional investment the reader can never truly understand my characters – they won’t know what drives them or what gives them pleasure. For me it is essential in all writing, but especially in erotic romance.

I have published a number of BDSM erotic short stories, one novella and have been included in some incredible best-selling erotic anthologies. “Submission at The Tower: The Depths of Desire” is my first contemporary BDSM erotic romance novel, and was published this year with Stormy Night Publications. I am currently progressing two new books – which will also be D/s, spanking novels – and look forward to creating many more sizzling story-lines in the future!

  1. The genre seems to attract many very talented female writers for some reason. For me that makes it even more fascinating and enjoyable!

  2. Wonderful interview Felicity Brandon. I started reading submission at the Tower but gut sidetracked doing so, I guess I will have to get back to reading it now. I remember your book being excellent what I read but my reader was out of order and I lost a bunch of great books I totally forgot I downloaded. Congratulations on the golden flogger
