Cara Bristol
2016 Golden Flogger Award Nominee
Irresistible Attraction

Why did you begin writing BDSM novels?
First, I’ve always been a writer. I used to be a journalist and PR professional, and I wrote mainstream fiction as a hobby for years. But when I sat down and let my mind just go…D/s emerged. I find alpha men hot as hell, and a Dominant is the uber Alpha. Intimate Submission, my first erotic D/s romance, I wrote just for fun. After struggling to get published for years, I sold Intimate Submission to the first publisher I offered it to, and I realized I was onto something. Knock on wood, I haven’t had a rejection since!

What does being nominated for the Golden Flogger Award mean to you?
This came as a huge surprise. I had no idea Irresistible Attractions had been nominated until I was notified. It is such an honor to be included among so many authors who are the “masters” of the BDSM genre, and to be recognized by readers. As an author, you work in solitude and isolation to put your best work out there. It’s nice to get that “atta-girl.”

Where would you like to see the BDSM genre head? How will it get there?
I’m going to approach this question from a writing/reading point of view. I have to confess, I like romance in my erotic romance, even when it’s a BDSM story. I want to fall in love with the hero, and I can’t do that if he’s an asshole. I’ve read quite a few books where the sub should have run as fast as she could in the opposite direction, where the Dom was a selfish jerk. I see novels where the heroine isn’t so much submissive, as a victim of crippling low self-esteem. This hurts the genre and the lifestyle. Readers unfamiliar with BDSM who pick up these books will perceive the lifestyle as abusive. The solution is to remember that there needs to be a story, the characters should be sympathetic, and the plot and motivation needs to make sense. It still won’t appeal to everyone, but please, give me CaraBristol1a hero who is heroic (of course, there’s a different standard for anti-heroes).

Tell us a little about yourself and your writing works.
I’m an erotic romance author who is best known for the Rod and Cane Society series about an organization of individuals who practice spanking, particularly domestic discipline. D/s and BDSM is a strong element of many of the books, particularly Irresistible Attractions. I also write sci-fi romance. The Breeder sci-fi romance trilogy has a strong D/s thread, as well. I’ve been writing erotic romance/BDSM-themed stories since 2009 and have published 22 titles to date.

Will you be attending BDSM Writers Con or other events we can meet you at?
So far, the only conference I have scheduled is PennedCon in St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 23-24, 2016. I’m considering the BDSM Writer’s Con and Lori Foster’s Reader and Author Get-Together.
