Check out what author, Drew Sera has to say about writing BDSM
What differences or difficulties, if any, do you see in writing D/s stories as opposed to your typical romance?
I think for the most part, D/s writers aren’t writing for the masses. Stories with a D/s dynamic or BDSM elements appeal to a smaller audience than typical romance stories. D/s writers face a smaller pool of publishing companies and even editing companies that will take on authors who write under the BDSM umbrella. I’ve found that many bloggers who read and offer reviews for authors will often display their notice of “will not read or accept stories containing anything BDSM related.” Having said that, there is a finer line of “off limit” content for typical romance stories versus the “off limit” content line for stories with BDSM and D/s elements. Writers with D/s and BDSM elements have a broader arsenal to work with in regards to “off limit” content.
Why have you chosen to attend BDSM Writers Con Attending?
BDSM Writers Con would give me the opportunity to meet fellow authors who write within this genre. It’s rare to attend a conference or event where all of the authors write under the BDSM umbrella.
What got you started into writing, in particular about a subject as controversial as BDSM?
I had been reading fiction books in this genre many years before I began writing. Being in the BDSM lifestyle myself, I was naturally drawn to fiction in this genre. While I found the books I was reading to be great and enjoyable, I often felt there was an aspect that was absent in many cases; the day to day life. This incredible lifestyle for many who live it, isn’t constant sex and flogger fun. I wanted to tell a story of that day-to-day life and with the encouragement from my better half, I picked up the pen and began my story. I wasn’t too concerned about the content being controversial because when I set out to write this, it wasn’t a goal to make pupils dilate.
If you could be any BDSM toy or equipment which would you be and why?
Rope. It’s unassuming when you look at it, but it should never be underestimated. It has the ability to be calm, but it can cause havoc. Rope also leaves a lasting impression.
Are there pieces of you in any of your characters?
As a writer, I think it’s impossible not to have even a fragment of yourself embedded in the characters.
A little about our author:
Drew Sera was born and raised in Sin City and has been immersed in the BDSM lifestyle as a submissive since 2011. As a native to Las Vegas, it was only natural for Drew to incorporate her love of Sin City in her books. Her knowledge of both the city and the lifestyle has given her insight and first hand experience on the actual fears and emotions that her characters go through. It’s through the relationships she forged there that she is able to give a realistic glimpse at the everyday side to this wonderful lifestyle.
She attributes much of her learning to her longtime partner and Dom who has encouraged her freedom to explore. She also credits Fetlife.com for connecting her with so many amazing people in the lifestyle. Drew prides herself on learning about alternative lifestyles by asking questions, attending classes and reaching out to many people in all aspects of the BDSM community. While Drew is primarily focused on writing, her creativity stretches beyond words; she draws a wicked stick figure. And, in January 2017, Drew was name as one of Mr. Blackthorne’s Wicked Pen Writers.
