New people and experiences are inspiring. As a writer, I can imagine–Boy oh boy! Can I ever imagine–but nothing matches real life experience. To inspire you, let me tell you what I got out of attending the BDSM Writers Con in NYC last year:
Friends. It’s great to be able to correspond with the authors I met for advice and writing swaps. Even better to grab a coffee, chat on the phone, or attend a book fair with a new friend.
A publishing contract with Loose Id. Picture it. Two, somewhat mature, lawyer moms who also write erotic romance chat over lunch. One is an indie author; the other is the CEO of a publisher. Badda-bing, badda-boom. My entire Masters of the Order series is being re-edited and re-released. I’m an indie no more.
Validation. Masterpiece, A Masters of the Order Novel, was selected as a finalist for Best BDSM Book 2015 (Romance). I would have hit Dr. Charley with that Golden Flogger though if she chose my humble submission over the other finalists: Sierra Cartwright, Jenna Jacob, Anne Land, and Roz Lee. Good Lord, they inspired me!
Inspiration, inspiration, and more inspiration
- for my new short story, A Violet Mind F**k, which will be included in the 2016 BDSM Writers Con Anthology. Thanks, Marty. I loved the wand!
- for my Masters of the Order series. Remember what I said about the previously published novels being re-edited? And my current work in progress, Harmony, Masters of the Order #4, has the speakers’ and presenters’ of BDSM Writers Con fingerprints all over it.
- for my new project. A courtroom drama about BDSM and the law. Be careful, kittens. It’s nasty out there.
Mentors. “I’m not a sadist, but I play one on TV.” Not without a good script writer you don’t. The conference has led to new introductions to several generous people who provide invaluable input into my work. Waving at you Master Brian and Traveling Fool!
Get out there. Expand your box. Lick every brain you meet. You never know where it might lead you.
