Speaks out

Why do you write BDSM novels?
I write what turns me on. I spend countless hours in my own head with my characters. They’re always there, whispering their secrets to me. Who wouldn’t want a parade of intriguing people with exotic lives and erotic tastes parading around their imagination?

On a more serious note, there is one truth in each of my stories that comes straight from my heart: Becoming the glorious person we are meant to be (and we are all meant to be glorious) requires the courage to celebrate what makes us unique, the imagination to create the person we aspire to become and the freedom to re-create that person over and over and over again. For me, that is BDSM in its truest form.

Where did you get the idea for the Masters of The Order Series?[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”160″ identifier=”B00O76ATAY” locale=”US” src=”http://bdsmwriterscon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/51ww41Mc60L.SL160.jpg” tag=”doctorcharley-20″ width=”100″]
Someone told me the novel Twilight was “inappropriate,” so of course, I read it. Got to hate the haters. It was my first romance novel and I was in my forties! What was I thinking? Anyway, Twilight led me to J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series and I fell in love with Vishous, a seriously sexy Vampire Dom. I took a cue from Ms. Ward (after all, imitation is the greatest form of flattery). I love character driven stories with a lot of heat so I created The Order, an elite and secret society of powerful brothers bound by social status and sexual tastes. I also like recurring characters and The Order gave me a vehicle to introduce and re-introduce my sexy boys to my readers. For me, the heart doesn’t beat fast until the reader falls in love, so I set about creating flawed characters who find themselves through their relationships. The Order provides a perfect mechanism to develop a series by offering a plethora of intriguing people with exotic lives and erotic tastes. It is a society with its own history and protocols that creates a common backdrop for each of my novels. The story of The Order is cumulative. People, places and character histories intertwine as the novels progress in time. Because characters appear in multiple novels, they gain dimension and familiarity as each individual story unfolds and adds layers to the greater story.

Life evolves and with it, so does sexuality. I have been in a committed monogamous relationship for over two decades and while I will leave my Husband’s revelations to His discretion, I will talk about myself. I was the smart kid, the one who was supposed to succeed and the “son” in a family of girls. Looking back, I suppose I was actually acting obediently, but I was aggressive with my education and career. Without trying to be too proud, some would label me highly successful. But life is all about what happens when you’re looking the other way. I went through a very difficult time and lost myself for a bit. During that period, I relied on my Husband to carry me. Our roles became more “traditional” if you will and I found more comfort in that than I ever believed I could. Our children grew, I healed and our relationship as lovers evolved. It may have taken me into my forties, but I am finally the woman I want to be as opposed to the woman I thought I was supposed to be. There are times when I don’t have to be in control. In fact, I prefer not to be. I can be vulnerable. I can trust. I can rely on another person to challenge me and excite me and support me because He loves me. The psychological journey I have taken has brought me happiness. Outside of our bedroom, I still possess my killer instinct, but alone with my Husband I am true to myself. I am His.

What inspires you to write?
I have had several careers, the most recent being in finance, and I needed a more creative outlet. Music is my muse and many scenes are inspired by a song. My first novel, Masterpiece, began with a vision of a woman on her knees in front of a man in a suit who lifts her from the floor. There is a song by Linkin Park called The Catalyst. “Lift me up, let me go.” Voila, meet Julianne and Nicolai.

I’m as hot for the romantic fantasy the next girl, but I would like to see BDSM writing evolve into more of what it is for me and that is empowerment. Enough with the damsels in distress waiting to be rescued only to end up leading the rescuer around by the nose. How will it get there? Education, both about the lifestyle and how to respect and celebrate individuality.

Are any of your characters you?
A part of me is in every character I write. I can’t say that one is more or less me, but all have glimmers of the writer behind the scenes. I share Nico’s cynicism and self-doubt, Julianne’s almost blind desperation to become what she aspires to be, Jacques’s narcissism and belief in destiny, Isabella’s hope in the HEA, Jerard’s tortured romantic soul, Alessandra’s snap that hides vulnerability behind a tough façade and Sabin’s concern for my fellow human beings.

Threesome 2Jillian Verne lives in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania with her husband (who has been her rock for longer than she is willing to admit), two daughters (who are and always will be her inspiration) and one royal cat to lord over them all.

She is passionate about family, romance, the beach and hockey. She is an Italian goddess, cook-extraordinaire (not bragging, well maybe a little), wife, lawyer, mom, UPenn and NYU alum, finance guru, professor, writer and “life is too short for small boxes” lady. Her idea of a perfect date is a cheese steak and a Flyers game. Her novels are erotic love stories based on a simple philosophy: the heart doesn’t beat faster until the reader falls in love.  Contact Jillian
