with our participants

When did you first become aware of BDSM?
In the late 1990s, I was online with CompuServe. Through a friend, I became aware of the Adult and Human Sexuality forums. I joined both forums, initially as a member and then as a volunteer staff member. In the Adult Sexuality forum, there was a closed section on BDSM. What I learned about the subject intrigued me enough to request access to the closed section, and I found that it struck a chord in me that I hadn’t even realized existed, up until that point.

What got you interested in writing BDSM?
A combination of factors. Back in the 1990s, I won an erotic short story competition and had a second short story of a similar nature published by the same magazine. After a hiatus of almost 20 years, I started writing again in 2012, around the time when I first became aware of Fifty Shades of Grey. It was only when I had a light bulb moment about writing seriously, with aChristieAdams_2 (2) view to trying to get published, that I turned my hand to writing a novel. It seemed entirely natural for the central male character to be a practicing Dominant.

If you haven’t written BDSM in the past, what’s made you want to start now?
The challenge of creating characters for whom BDSM – in my case, D/s in particular – is an intrinsic part of their nature. To show the sensuality and intimacy of a loving relationship where trust and communication are paramount. I started my first novel, thinking that that would be it, but I found that when I finished it, I wanted to write so much more. That novel became the foundation for a series, Club Aegis. The second novel in the series will be published before the BDSM Writers Con takes place, and the third, featuring a female Dominant, is well under way.

Why have you chosen to attend BDSM Writers Con?
It’s a wonderful opportunity to mix with other writers, to talk to experts in the field, and to mix with readers, to find out what they enjoy reading, and if there are aspects of BDSM fiction that they feel have not yet been explored, or explored adequately. It’s my first ever Con of any kind, and I am looking forward to the experience immensely.

Christie is a ChristieAdams_1British author based in north-west England, where she works as a secretary to support her writing habit. Past jobs have included several years working as an audit clerk for chartered accountants, and a significant amount of time spent as a computer programmer.

English wasn’t her best subject at school. However, in her mid-teens she discovered the enjoyment of writing fan fiction, where she penned romantic stories featuring some of her favorite characters from British television.

In her twenties she progressed to writing romantic novels, and boasts a proud record of 100% rejection by the romance publishers of the day. A decade later she had a little more success with short stories, coming second in a competition run by a computer magazine, followed by first prize in another competition run by a monthly publication for the female market.

A return to writing in 2012, following an extended hiatus, saw her write her first erotic romance, which was accepted by a US publisher in 2013. Having revised and re-titled that work, she has now published it independently as the foundation for a series of stories about relationships featuring BDSM.  To learn more visit: www.christieadamsauthor.com
