Golden Flogger Award Nominee Jolynn Raymond
Why did you begin writing BDSM novels?
I’ve always had a crazy vivid imagination and even as a kid would talk through the dialog of pretend character in my head, but it wasn’t until my thirties that I began to write. BDSM piqued my interest in a big way. The thought of spanking, power exchange, and role play really got me worked up, but the stuff I found on the internet, didn’t really do it for me. Thing are much more exciting when you control the ideas, plots, and characters, and that ability to control it all appealed to the dominant in me. My wicked brain always adds a kinky twist.
What does being nominated for the Golden Flogger Award mean to you?
I am beyond thrilled. It means even more that Taken in Hand; my nonfiction book has been recognized. My goal with that book was to educate and help people as they discover their kink and try to navigate the rough waters of BDSM relationships, and to know it has helped people and has been recognized for its quality content delights me.
His Lordships Wayward Wife has a very strong heroine. That is actually not my usual flare, but she fit so well with the plot line. This book is actually my favorite when it comes to the kinky historical novels I’ve written, and so the nomination for it really resonates with my feelings.
What is the hardest part of writing your novel?
Second guessing myself when I read it over. I could seriously spend hours or even days editing and tweaking one chapter, and it drives me crazy. It’s not that I dislike what I wrote so much as I am trying to make it better and always see little things I think need changing. I actually had an easier time with Taken in Hand because that book is written how I speak. It has my conversational style and so is very familiar. Worlds and characters I create aren’t nearly so cut and dry.
Tell us a little about yourself and your writing works.
I have many roles in my life, and it seems almost as many names to go with them. My vanilla life and job just don’t leave enough time for writing, and that is frustrating. I am planning on retiring in just a few years and opening a kind of BDSM retreat where people can come to reconnect, learn, or be trained in either the submissive or dominant role. Right now it’s just a dream, but thoughts are percolating and plans begun.
As for the rest of me, I am a wife, lesbian, dominant, head of the household, sadist, and writer. I couldn’t do any of it without my lovely wife, Beauty. She is a stay at home wife who runs the book business, cares for me and our fur kids, and keeps us all healthy and happy. We live a domestic discipline lifestyle as well as a power exchange relationship in BDSM pretty much 24/7. It’s our natural way of life.
As for my writing, I am currently working on a series that will feature Evelyn Payne, or as her kink family calls her, Headmistress Pain. She is establishing a school and retreat for training people in BDSM. Sound familiar? There is always another kinky historical brewing, but it hasn’t solidified in my mind yet.
I also have thoughts swirling for two other nonfiction books. One on being kinky and aging or having a chronic illness or disability. Just because we age or become disabled, our kinkiness doesn’t just vanish. The other book deals with how to hold a formal CFNM party. CFNM stands for Clothed Female, Nude Male. Yes, we really do have those over at our house. An impeccably served dinner, party games, foot rubs for the ladies, and kinky play if anyone wishes. There is no set way to have a CFNM, but I have worked through service issues and invented games to play so why not share my knowledge.
Will you be attending BDSM Writers Con or other events we can meet you at?
I’ll be attending the BDSM Writer’s Con with my wife, Beauty, and Jud, another member of my kink family. We are all very excited to be going to New York.
I’m a strong, bold, and passionate woman who does her best to live out her dreams. I’m having the best years of my life right now and have discovered my true self in my kinky lifestyle. I’m a wife, Mistress, writer, lesbian, and grandma with a devious imagination and a taste for darkness.
