Featured Author and Golden Flogger Award nominee Jennifer Kacey
speaks out about writing, BDSM
and more…
Why did you begin writing BDSM novels?
BDSM turns me on. It just does. Even things I’m not particularly interested in trying IRL I still love reading about. Kink is fun, it can be playful and flirty, or sexy and delicious, or naughty and dark. Depends on the situation and the people you’re playing with. And each and every experience can be completely different. Just love that. So getting to write some of my stories down and share them with the world is AWESOME!!!
Do you participate in D/s activities or merely write about them?
I’m active in the lifestyle and thankfully get to participate in them as often as my schedule allows. Getting to see kink from many different angles helps me write. As a bottom, as a babygirl, as a submissive, as a voyeur – they each give me vital pieces to make my worlds believable and show readers what BDSM really is.
Where did you get your information on this lifestyle?
I’m active in the lifestyle in TX, have lots of kinky friends and read A LOT of BDSM novels. Thankfully I have a lot of peers I can turn to when I have questions and need some advice or a point in the right direction. Plus, I like to try new things and I don’t tend to write about things I have no working knowledge of. That always makes the editing process on my books SO MUCH FUN because I remember where my head was when I wrote a particular scene. Love that!
What does being nominated for the Golden Flogger Award mean to you?
I’m speechless about it. Truly. Writing is cathartic for me. It helps me work through things in a “real” way. Having other people read it and LIKE it, floors me on a day to day basis. Then being nominated for “BEST BDSM BOOK OF THE YEAR”…seriously? I really thought it was a joke at first. Kid you not!
Do you conduct any advocacy work in this lifestyle or is it strictly fiction base for you? If so, what?
My novels are fiction. I created a BDSM club in Kansas called The Library. *snicker* People that aren’t real with issues strictly from my head. But the emotions behind them are real. And hopefully authentic to the lifestyle. That’s my goal at least. I don’t write fantastical stories about a billionaire and some newbie chick. And since I’m “out” I can talk about real world experiences and hopefully dispel some myths circulating about BDSM in general.
Where would you like to see the BDSM genre head? How will it get there?
We write more books. We go to more conferences. We “talk” about this thing called kink and educate people on how beautiful and amazing it is. The spectrum that falls under the category of BDSM is so wide and I don’t think a lot of people think about it in those terms. Accepting what I “am” helps me explain it to other people in terms they can understand. It doesn’t hurt that I love talking about it!
What is the hardest part of writing your novel?
Knowing when to stop tweaking. Hands down the hardest part for me. Always think I can make it better.
