Golden Flogger Award nominee
Jackie Ashenden speaks out
Why did you begin writing BDSM novels?
To be honest, I didn’t intend to. I let my characters lead the way and they were the ones who decided that’s what they wanted in the bedroom.
Do you participate in D/s activities or merely write about them?
I just write about them.
Where did you get your information on this lifestyle?
I Google stuff. My characters are typically not in the lifestyle per se, but some have had past association with it.
What does being nominated for the Golden Flogger Award mean to you?
It means that I’ve done a good job writing BDSM and for someone who’s not in the lifestyle, that’s a fantastic honor.
Do you conduct any advocacy work in this lifestyle or is it strictly fiction base for you? If so, what?
It’s strictly fiction based.
Where would you like to see the BDSM genre head? How will it get there?[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”160″ identifier=”B00MQOTM84″ locale=”US” src=”http://bdsmwriterscon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/511BJpH6R5L.SL160.jpg” tag=”doctorcharley-20″ width=”107″]
I’d like to see more about the psychology of BDSM since that’s what interests me the most. I’d like to see more characters thinking about what they get out of the lifestyle and why they find it so freeing. A bit more of the mind games which are really hot .;-)
What is the hardest part of writing your novel?
For me it’s writing the beginning, where I’m still getting to know my characters and how they think. What their back stories are and their personalities. It can take a while for that to all come together.
Tell us a little about yourself and your writing works.
Well, I live in Auckland, New Zealand, with my husband and two kids. I write full time and most of my books tend to be heavy on the angst. I like writing about broken people finding strength in love, usually with lots of sexy times.
Will you be attending BDSM Writers Con or other events we can meet you at?
No, sadly, I won’t be since I’m in NZ. I will be at the Romance Writers of America conference in New York this year though. And I’m online too. 🙂
Jackie has been writing fiction since she was eleven years old. She particularly likes to write dark, emotional stories with alpha heroes who’ve just got the world to their liking only to have it blown wide apart by their kick-ass heroines. She lives in Auckland, New Zealand with her husband, the inimitable Dr Jax and their kids. When she’s not torturing alpha males and being mean to their heroines, she can be found drinking chocolate martinis, reading anything she can lay her hands on, posting random crap on Twitter, or being forced to go mountain biking with her husband.
